The brain and the gut are intimately related on both an electrical basis as well as a biochemical basis. The brain speaks to the bowel and the bowel speaks to the brain. For instance, the insula is an area of the brain that has to do with somatic perception. Somatic perception is our feeling in the gut, and this area is tightly linked to the biochemical and inflammatory state of the bowel. When there is inflammation or increased lipopolysaccharide exposure in the blood stream, turning on an inflammatory process, you will often see effect in areas like the insula and the anterior singular cortex. There is a bidirectional mechanism. Individuals with electrical instability, as recognized on qEEG in these areas, are more susceptible to the impact of toxins and inflammagens from their gut. By being aware of the bidirectionality of the gut-brain axis we get to choose the most direct method to improve a person’s health.
Stress has been shown to increase the amount of bacterial toxins in the blood stream. Our perception of stress plays a very large role in the expression of inflammation that comes with exposure to that stress. Individuals under chronic stress are going to be more potently affected by a dysbiotic bacterial/fungal population in their bowel.

Coming back to the gut, again, if that individual who is engaging in brain training of some sort has an increase in intestinal permeability and high inflammatory load as a result of a gut dysfunction, then that individual is going to be impaired in their ability to learn most effectively, and neurofeedback, while it may still be effective, may not be as efficient in the learning process. Neurofeedback combined with a diet is the most impressive as we address conditions of the brain. A hallmark of brain-supportive therapy is a diet that is low antigen, low simple carbohydrate, high nutrient density, and high in essential fatty acids. Sabancı University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Computer Science and Engineering PhD Candidate Günet Eroğlu developed “Auto Train Brain”, a mobile application for dyslexic children having academic and learning difficulties.
Sabancı University Computer Science and Engineering PhD Candidate Günet Eroğlu developed a neurofeedback-based mobile phone application for dyslexic children. The application helps to reduce the effects of dyslexia, a subgroup of specific learning disorders for which a pharmaceutical treatment is not yet available, and to improve the academic achievement of such children.
Dyslexia is defined as a neurological difference in acquiring reading, spelling and writing skills by the European Dyslexia Association, and is seen in individuals with both average and above-average intellect. Thought to have affected geniuses such as Einstein, Mozart and Leonardo da Vinci, dyslexia is usually discovered in the first years of primary school as it affects reading skills.
Education is the only treatment
Dyslexia is seen in 10 to 15% of schoolchildren. According to research, 83% of children who have been diagnosed and have gone special education by the first, second or third grades can continue their academic life without issues.
Individuals who were dyslexic as children have relatively improved immunity in their adulthood and encounter fewer problems in school, but have an increased propensity towards Alzheimer’s in later years. Therefore, lifelong and continuous learning is critical to improve cognitive capacity and preserve health.
The application improves reading speed and reduces errors in dyslexic children
The “Auto Train Brain” mobile application supports learning in children with visual and auditory games and improves through feeding their brain signals back to them (neurofeedback). According to pre-tests on 100 healthy participants, reading performances increased and fewer mistakes are done during reading.
“Auto Train Brain” receives TÜBİTAK and DCP support
HMS Health Mobile Software Sağlık Mobil Yazılım ve Eğitim A.Ş. (HMS A.Ş. https://healthmobilesoftware.com/) was founded by Günet Eroğlu, a woman entrepreneur, in partnership with the Sabancı University commercialization interface INOVENT A.Ş. and with funding support by the “TÜBİTAK 1512-BIGG” program, and also received investment from Diffusion Capital Partners (DCP) this month. HMS A.Ş. become one of the technology investments of DCP, Turkey’s first technology transfer and risk capital fund management company.
Günet Eroğlu devised this software based on her own experiences, and continues her efforts under the guidance of Sabancı University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences professors Müjdat Çetin and Selim Balcısoy. The funds will be used for R&D efforts and further improvement of the application.
Sabancı University has made a patent application for “Auto Train Brain”, and the mobile application will be available on Google Play Store on December 31, 2017, and on App Store on February 28, 2018.
The Clinical Trial Has Started
For 7-10 years old dyslexic kids, the clinical trial has been started at Ankara University Cebeci Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, under the commandment of Prof Dr Serap Teber (the child neurologist).
Prelimenary Research Results – 21 March
- Participants: 43 people between 8 – 81, 17 dyslexic people. AutoTrainBrain is applied on the participants.
- At least one parameter has been improved (Theta, Beta/Theta, Alpha/Theta): 41 people (95%), 14 dyslexic people (%82)
- Those who have lowered Theta: 37 people (86%), 12 dyslexics (70%)
- Beta/Theta ratio is improved: 29 people (67%), 11 dyslexics (64%)
Alpha/Theta ratio is improved: 26 people (60%), 9 dyslexics (52%)
The more AutoTrainBrain is used, the improvements are higher.
Except eMotiv headset pressure during the activity, no side effects are reported during or after the experiment.
